In recent months a good number of tablets have appeared that were presented as alternatives to the star of compact tablets Android: the Nexus 7. Some have had their price as their main asset, while others have trusted to gain a foothold in the market in some certainly peculiar characteristics, such as the Asus FonePad, which managed to attract a lot of attention in its presentation at the MWC de Barcelona for its ability to function as a telephone, despite its 7 inches. To give a hand to all those who are undecided between these two tablets of the Taiwanese, we show you a video comparison between the two that explores both its hardware and its user experience.
To the long list of candidates to compete against Nexus 7, so far this year a few quite interesting have been added, and the Asus FonePad it is certainly one of them. Obviously, if we opt for a tablet with connection Wi-Fi only, the Nexus 7 it is somewhat more affordable (199 Euros), but for 20 euros more, with the Asus FonePad we can get a tablet with a mobile connection (the version with 3G and 32 GB of storage capacity of Nexus 7 would cost us 299 Euros) and we have the additional possibility of using the tablet also as a mobile phone, although given the oddity of using a device 7 inches this way this option may not convince too many users.
In contrast to this advantage in the section on connectivity, the new device Asus arrives with slightly inferior characteristics to those of the tablet of Google, especially regarding processor. The first part of the video that we bring you (the first 3 minutes approximately), focuses precisely on the comparison of Technical specifications and, indeed, here the balance is likely to be tilted on the side of Nexus 7.
This is not, in any case, the most interesting part of the video and to contrast the characteristics hardware of both tablets, you can also take a look at our comparative. However, in the rest of the video we can see some issues for which a video comparison it is more useful, contrasting the design, the picture quality, the performance and the user experience on both devices.
With regard to the design, as you can see, apart from the rear casing (aluminum on the FonePad and plastic in the Nexus 7), they are practically identical, with a very similar size, thickness and weight. There are also no substantial differences in terms of the picture quality (in fact, Technical specifications of the screen of the two tablets are the same), although it appears to be slightly higher in the Google.
In the video, however, we are shown a small advantage of the FonePad, related to the wide possibilities of customizing screen settings to optimize our user experience. Finally, and contrary to what we might think, there are also no important differences in performance between the quad-core processor of the Nexus 7 and the single-core FonePad, at least in basic tasks and navigation, although we may find some more if they showed us the two tablets running more demanding games, for example.
