A few days ago, Google published a curious video in which it was shown, in an accelerated way, two Surface Book playing with Vimeo with Chrome. The cut has served to show the public the efficiency improvements that have been provided to the browser and confirms that resource management is significantly better in the span of seven updates. The latest version of the browser also already contains the material design implemented by those of Mountain View.
Chrome is typically recognized as one of the best browsers (or simply the best) of how many we can use both on a tablet or smartphone and on a PC. However, it is also common to hear that the resource consumption of the tool is higher than that of some of its rivals, especially with regard to the battery and to the use of RAM. In any case, Google has been showing that the works of optimization they are on the right track.
Chrome, with the Surface Book as a guest, test its improvements
The following video shows us how far Google has improved the performance and efficiency of Chrome in just one year. Here it is.
The Surface Book on the left uses a development from 2015, which corresponds to the version 46 of the browser, while the unit on the right uses the version 53 Chrome, released in 2016. Both computers keep the screen on playing a Vimeo video, but while the first one turns off at 8 27 hours and minutes, the second continues active until 10 39 hours and minutes, that is, around 2 hours and 12 minutes later.
As we say it is excellent news since the best browser in a matter of stability and speed, It also becomes competitive in terms of resource use, as Chrome is increasingly managing to put more margin with Firefox, while Microsoft is divided between the emerging Edge and what's left of Explore.
In any case, it is an almost advertising video, and although we do not believe that the data is obviously manipulated, there may always have been some retouch to improve results. Similarly, the use of Surface Book highlights the particularities of the experiment. It is a very powerful device and capable of taking advantage of browser enhancements in a way that perhaps other models, older or more modest hardware, cannot.
