Google works to improve the battery consumption of the Nexus 5

Nexus 5 camera test

The Nexus 5 's battery capacity isn't particularly advanced compared to other phones released around the same time, such as the Xperia Z1 or the LG G2. However, with careful management of the device's settings and the functions used, it can perform quite well . But the Android 4.4.2 update is causing significant power drain on some units.

As reported by Phone Arena , Google is working to fix the excessive battery drain that some devices have experienced since installing KitKat 4.4.2 . This issue is related to certain apps using the camera, which keeps it active even when the system is idle. While we don't yet know when the fix will be released, it will almost certainly arrive with the next system update.

The magnitude of the problem

In some particularly serious cases, it wasn't simply a matter of the Nexus 5 having slightly shorter battery life or experiencing some performance loss after the update. Users have reported battery drain of up to 1% every two minutes with the screen off, meaning that in just a few hours the battery would be completely depleted even without using the device.

Furthermore, the equipment overheated, not only consuming a lot of energy, but also compromising the lifespan of the other internal components.

Google Recommendations

Although it is not the sole source of the problem, a Google engineer has "blamed" the Skype app on Android for keeping the mm-qcamera-daemon process permanently active, which consumed more than 50% of the Nexus 5's battery.

This engineer recommends, until the next update is released, uninstalling the app and restarting your system. This should result in a noticeable decrease in battery consumption while Google completes the patch to restore the system to normal. It's even better to restart (or, more easily, reboot ) every time you use an app that accesses the camera.
