Lumia 1520 vs Galaxy Note 3: comparison

Lumia 1520 vs. Galaxy Note 3

With the Lumia 1520 y Lumia 1320, Nokia has finally carried out its first foray into the phablets, although each one will address a very specific segment and it is at Lumia 1520 who will probably have to participate in a more complicated battle: that of the high end, in which there are rivals of such magnitude as the Xperia Z Ultra or Galaxy Note 3. Precisely against the phablet of Samsung, probably the smartphone Android pointer to date, we are going to measure the Technical specifications phablet Nokia. Who will be the winner?

Designer

We certainly meet two designs full of personality and very faithful to the distinctive lines of each of its manufacturers, the Lumia 1520 with sharper angles and the Galaxy Note 3 with smaller side frames. In the chapter of materialsHowever, for once the phablet of Samsung is not in an unfavorable position, since it is also Nokia has opted for a plastic casing for its device. Yes, the Finns have the upper hand on the question of colors available, which will already be four (black, white, yellow and red), although new shades will probably arrive later also for the South Korean phablet.

Dimensions

It must be assumed that the screen of the Lumia 1520 is significantly greater than that of the Galaxy Note 3 (0,3 inches bigger, more specifically), so obviously the device will also be bulkier and heavier, but how much more, exactly? Well, the phablet of Nokia is 1 cm longer (16,28 cm front 15,12 cm), half a centimeter wider (8,54 cm against 7,92 cm) and less than a millimeter thicker (8,7 mm against 8,3 mm). That is, the size differences are not really too great. They are, however, when it comes to weight: although the Finns' phablet may not look much larger, it is noticeably heavier (209 gr against 168 gr).

Screen

As we mentioned, the first difference between the screens of both devices is the size: that of the Lumia 1520 is 6 inches, while that of Galaxy Note 3 is 5.7 inches. There are also differences in the materials, since the Finnish phablet has a screen LCD and that of the South Koreans Super AMOLEDAlthough the question of which of the two is better, as you already know, does not have a very objective answer and varies a lot with the appreciations of each one. Finally, in terms of resolution, the tie is absolute, with 1920 x 1080 in both cases, although, logically, the difference in size makes the pixel densities different: PPI 367 for device Nokia y PPI 386 for the one of Samsung.

Unlimited

The two phablets are outstanding in this section, both mounting the most powerful processor on the market: the Snapdragon 800 quad core to 2,3 GHz with Adreno 330 GPU. Samsung, however, it has an advantage in the RAM memory section, since at the moment it is still the only smartphone with 3 GB, Whereas the Lumia 1520 it only has 2 GB. We will have to wait for the benchmarks to see how much real difference in power there is between the two, although whatever the result is, it will probably be practically negligible in the everyday use experience.

Operating System

As always when we deal with the issue of operating systems, we must start by recognizing that which one is the best for each depends a lot on personal aesthetic preferences and the familiarity of each with them. There are a couple of issues that, in any case, should be highlighted: if, on the one hand, Windows 8.1 has meant a notable improvement in the experience of using the system on mobile devices, it is undeniable that the application store of Windows is still far behind in variety of Google Play. Regarding manufacturers' own software, Nokia has improved and introduced new applications aimed above all at the creation, editing and management of audiovisual content, while in the Galaxy Note 3 highlights the functions and applications optimized for the use of the S Pen.

Storage capacity

El Galaxy Note 3 it would be superior in principle in the section of storage capacity, due to the fact that we can achieve it with up to 64 GB, to which is added the possibility of expanding it through micro-SD. In the Lumia 1520 we also have this option, but we can only buy it with 32 GB hard drive (which is probably more than enough for the average user in any case).

Cameras

As is often the case with Finnish devices, the camera section is one where the Lumia 1520 shines especially, thanks to its camera 20 SM with Carl Zeiss lenses, optical image stabilizer and Dual LED flash. This does not mean, of course, that the main camera of the Galaxy Note 3 does not live up to what is usually expected from a high-end smartphone: 13 SM, LED flash and possibility to record video in 4K.

Battery

Although we will have to wait for the results of the real autonomy tests, there is no doubt that the data of the battery capacity of the Lumia 1520 are really promising, with nothing more and nothing less than 3400 mAh, well above the already impressive 3200 mAh battery Galaxy Note 3. In fact, estimates of Nokia autonomy in stand-by (768h) are about twice those of Samsung (420h).

Price

At the moment for him Lumia 1520 the only reference we have is the price for the United States, which would be $749. Theoretically we would be talking about 550 Euros, but most likely in Europe it will eventually cost 749 Euros you too. This is precisely the price for which the Galaxy Note 3 also, and taking into account that in both cases we are talking about models with 32 GB it would be fair enough to say that equality is total. It must be borne in mind, however, that some distributors are already selling for less than 650 Euros.
